Sobrino, Jon

(b. 1938)

   Theologian.

   Sobrino was born in Spain and was trained first as an engineer at St Louis University and then studied theology in Frankfurt. Since then he has taught philosophy in El Salvador and he is known as a prominent proponent of liberation theology. He is the author of several influential books including Christology at the Crossroads and the True Church of the Poor. He believes that there is a close parallel between the situation in Latin America today and the historical context in which Jesus lived and he argues that the role of the Church is to extend the liberating action of Christ.
